Attention: New Yorkers

I need help. Is a $55,000 salary enough to live and experience New York?

I was offered the position but the salary is on the low end, in my opinion.

Honestly, I could probably find a job in Dallas for that pay.

But, it's New York. And the more I think about it (without putting Cowboy in mind. And that is difficult enough) I want to continue my career - because I love my job, but I don't love it so much that I'm willing to be be poor in a new city for it.

HELP!

Honestly that depends completely on your life style.

Will you have a car payment?

I live in San Diego and make around that, and things are tight. But that is with a car payment.

How often do you go out? How often do you eat out? Big shopping habit?

I'd suggest looking to see how much apartments go for where you want to live. And if there are even any available. I'd image you'd need a roomate to get by.

Definitely. However, you may need to consider the boroughs. If you don't have a car, and you are your own primary expense, you can find a studio or one bedroom for between 800-2000 a month in Manhattan alone, and 600-1000 in the outer boroughs. I've lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and did so on a grad student's budget. 55,000 is about 50,000 more than I had. :-)

Maybe you need to give a run down of what your total monthly expenditures are, taking eating out/shopping in account. Then these New Yorkers might be able to give you a better sense of whether you can survive.

I say 55K in new york is not enough, but that's just me.

I don't think $55K is enough to live up NY. Everything is more expensive there than it is everywhere else (and this is coming from someone who also lives in a very expensive city). Then again, it depends on what you're making now. If it's a lot more, your quality of life might not suffer (unless you count weather in that quality!). If it's not much more or the same, I think it definitely won't be worth it, because you'll effectively be living on less.

Personally? I wouldn't take it. But I believe in staying where the people you love are. :)

Definitely. I managed to live on 40k/yr in NYC... but the job I had was TOTALLY, COMPLETELY worth it. Would you be able to say the same? Also... if you DO have a car payment, sell the car!!! You'll hate having one if you're living in Manhattan... honestly, you wouldn't need it if you lived in one of the other boroughs, even. The NYC subway system just might be one of the greatest things to ever, ever, ever exist, ever.

Also... it's NYC!!! Hello?! NYC! I believe that everyone should be blessed enough to experience living this wonderful, amazing city... you don't have to stay forever, and you only live once:)

My sister was able to do it, and had extra money. She lived in Brooklyn and worked in the city. You can do it, and I agree with the other poster--you only live once, and NY is an awesome place to live!! Like she said--it doesn't have to be forever...
